arts, culture & neighborhood change
Queens Museum of Art Print

picture 010The Corona neighborhood of Queens is home to a staggering diversity of peoples, old and young, new and long-established, having a range of economic differences, etc. The Queens Museum of Art is a major cultural venue and alternative to Manhattan's mega-museums.  It is the museum's goal to go beyond traditional museum practice and provide its neighbors with additional resources to help level the playing field and to provide guidance in assuring that the great Corona diversity serves as a boon to community planning and becomes a celebrated aspect of its identity.

QMA has entered into partnerships as a key member of the newly formed Corona Community Action Network (Corona CAN) which will serve to connect museum and community in a comprehensive way that treats the concerns of local businesses, newcomers and long-time residents to a long overdue connecting infrastructure for communication and action.  The museums' efforts are manifold: its exihibits feature local artist in a world class venue and challenge audiences around shifting sands issues; it has sparked successful efforts to increase ethnic attendance at the museum; it has opened its doors and resources to local community groups; it has encourage youth participation in the civic governing process; and it has hired a full-time Immigrant Communities Education Coordinator, and more recently a Community Organizer.
