The Arts Need Better Arguments |

People in the arts had a triumph.
They got culture money into the stimulus bill -- but not without a fight. The House, in its version of the bill, gave $50 million to the National Endowment for the Arts, increasing its budget by more than the third. Then the Senate took that out. Arts advocates mobilized, made phone calls, asked supporters to make some noise. And lo! The final version of the bill restored the funds.
Arts advocates, from Robert Redford to the president of New York's Lincoln Center, are celebrating now. But I wonder, in a still, small voice, if this is really such a victory

BROOKLYN AT EYE LEVEL To Be Made Into A Full-Length Play |

The Civilians (Steven Cosson, Artistic Director) the award-winning New York-based theater company, have announced that they will commission a full-length play from their newest project, Brooklyn at Eye Level, following a successful series of initial performances. The show played to capacity crowds December 4 - 7 at The Brooklyn Lyceum and was embraced by the entire community as an important contribution to the often contentious debate surrounding the Atlantic Yards development.

Floating Pool At Barretto Point Park Receives Best Of Parks "Keeping It Cool Award" |

While studying at Columbia many years ago, Anne Buttenwieser, a long time friend and promoter of Parks, had an idea to expand swimming opportunities and water access by developing a floating pool. Her years of commitment to this project came to fruition last year as the “Floating Pool Lady” made its debut in Brooklyn Bridge Park. In 2008, the aptly named floating pool took off for Barretto Point Park in the Bronx. The success and popularity here of the pool has earned it our Best of Parks 2008 “Keeping it Cool” Award.
